Currently, the only way to share group-private content on the web is to have every member of the group create an account with a service and then manually add them to a group. This is both a burden on the service as it must have a complete permissions infrastructure and on its users. With a distributed ACL protocol, third parties would manage these ACLs allowing a single ACL to be used across multiple services. Such a system would also increase user privacy as the content and the ACL of the content would be known by separate services.
