Users of SMPs make decisions and form opinions using information that they observe on SMPs. Users are exposed to content that is curated by the SMP and often paid for by third parties to promote products or opinions.
Regulation of social media platforms has been relatively loose. Despite efforts to curb known effects of content curation which SMPs will only realistically adopt if self-regulation occurs at reasonably low cost. NEWLINE We will aim to develop a method that quantifies the effect of content curation and studies its effect on user learning. This framework can also be used to illustrate the ease and effectiveness of the proposed regulation. To encourage SMPs to adopt self-regulation, which would allow them to tell the public that they have a principled regulatory framework.
“I am very excited about SuperUROP because its giving me an opportunity to try a completely new area of research. I hope to learn more about cutting edge recommendation algorithms and how positively impacting recommendation algorithms used in industry.”
