Abstract

The passive guidewires currently used in endovascular neurosurgery make navigating the brain’s complex yet delicate vasculature a challenge and expose surgeons to an unhealthy dose of X-rays. My research will focus on developing revised steering control principles for the Zhao Lab’s previously developed magnetically steerable guidewire. The goal is to create an intuitive end-to-end system that will allow for much smoother operator control of the guidewire by allowing them to directly manipulate the guidewire tip instead of the magnet that then steers the guidewire.

I chose to participate in SuperUROP in order to gain in-depth research experience. I loved my previous UROP with the Zhao Lab and wanted to continue my involvement at a deeper level. I’m excited to apply the theoretical and analytical skills I’m learning in my fundamental mechanical engineering classes to an impactful project.
