F.A.Q.

F.A.Q.

    • Yes, generally.  6.UR is recommended. To participate in SuperUROP, you should have completed a UROP.  The UROP could have been in any department and for pay or credit.

We usually do accept internship experience if you haven’t done a UROP, but UROP experience gives you a better handle on how research groups at MIT work than a job or internship in industry.

    • Let us know who you would like to work with; we might just have to update the Approved Faculty List

    • You can find both lists here: https://superurop-apply.mit.edu/

    • To complete the SuperUROP program, the student needs to participate in the fall term and the subsequent spring term.  The maximum payment per semester is $3K ($25/hr).  During these terms the student needs to attend 6.UAR as well as do research.  The process starts in the spring when the student finds a supervisor and submits a proposal on the SuperUROP application website.  If their proposal is accepted, they start their research in the following fall semester.  Some departments pay the SuperUROP supervisor $2k/semester.

    • Yes, it would be 9.UR credit.

    • Yes, Course 18 students can participate in SuperUROP (6.UAR). You can get funding for your research work from:

      • your department,
      • your SuperUROP project faculty supervisor, the UROP office, or
      • by applying through MGAIC or HEALS

Alternatively, you can do your research for credit.

    • If you are being paid as an MEng student via an RAship or a  TAship, you have two options with respect to 6.UAR/SuperUROP:

      • drop 6.UAR/SuperUROP because you can’t be paid by both SuperUROP and your RAship/Taship; or
      • continue with 6.UAR/SuperUROP without pay. You can earn some credits for your SuperUROP research.

Since RAships and TAships pay better than SuperUROP, students usually choose to be paid by the TAship/RAship and  switch their SuperUROP to a small number of credits to not exceed their MEng credit restriction.

    • SuperUROP doesn’t fund students during IAP.  If students wish to work on their research during IAP, we suggest that they either do their research for credit by submitting an IAP UROP application, or ask their supervisors if they can fund them.

    • You will need to submit a UROP IAP/Sponsored-Research application by the January 6, 2026, deadline. Please obtain a cost object (account number) and pay rate from your PI, as this information is required for the application.

Details on how to complete the application can be found on the UROP website: https://urop.mit.edu/deadline/iap-dlc-supervisor-funding-sponsored-research-credit-volunteer-urop-application-deadline/.

    • The best way to receive SuperUROP funding while doing your research project in the SportsLab, would be to find an EECS professor to co-supervise you.The other alternatives are: ask your SportsLab supervisor for funding OR apply to the UROP office for funding.

    • You will have to fill out the fall 2025 UROP survey before submitting a new application for spring 2026. The UROP Office should have sent you a link. Reach out to the UROP office to request that they resend you the survey link.

    • Students in blended majors (6-7, 6-9, 6-14, and 11-6) are EECS students and qualify for SuperUROP funding.
