Abstract

The goal of this project is to improve upon a physics based finite element model for fragmentation. Tools currently used in industry do not have a high fidelity method for examining cases with many fragments, especially at a high strain rate. Using the fragment mechanics of the Summit code framework, we will develop a simulation that can compute the number, mass and kinetic energy of fragments. The process will be scalable to an arbitrary number of parallel processors so that it can rapidly run calculations on large, high detail meshes. This process will enable efficient examination of high risk scenarios in space travel and other applications.
