Analysis of Feature Cues in Speech of Children with Speech Disorders

Research Areas

Stefanie Shattuck-Hufnagel

Words are composed of phonemes and distinctive features which can be identified through acoustic cues found in sound wave measurements. The project aims to study the acoustic cue patterns in the speech of children who have been diagnosed with conditions such as autism, dyslexia, and specific language impairment, in order to identify the distinctive cue characteristics of each disorder. If the speech disorders can be characterized based on their acoustic cue patterns, we hope to develop a program that can computationally help to diagnose a patient’s speech disorder and to develop individual-patient-appropriate treatment methods.

“Through SuperUROP, I hope to gain further experience in data analysis and predictive program development. In addition, I hope to explore new fields such as linguistics and clinical study though the project.”
