Microbial Seed Coatings to Boost Sunflower Agriculture Under Salt Stress

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) improve plant germination, growth, and crop yields and can help plants tolerate drought and salinity. A consortia of PGPR species can amplify the benefits conferred to plants; yet, their sensitivity to abiotic stresses limits their use in regions lacking reliable infrastructure. The Marelli Lab is developing low-cost seed coatings that stabilize microbes during storage made of biomaterials upcycled from agricultural biomass waste. My goal is to optimize the quantities of bacteria stored within the coatings, as well as analyze the effects of the coatings and consortia on plant germination and growth under saline conditions. We will also evaluate the performance of coatings for dry storage viability and culturability.
Through this SuperUROP, I want to expand upon my experiences in previous lab classes and UROPs in a more independent setting. I also intend on developing my skills in experimental design and scientific communication while pursuing my interests in sustainable and green biotechnology. I’m looking forward to learning more about plant-microbe interactions, and I’m excited to contribute to the project.
