Abstract

Optical Metamaterials: Computational Optical Effects from Deformable 3D-Printed Structures
In this project, we develop optical metamaterials, which are 3D-printed voxel structures that couple their mechanical deformation with optical effects. Prior works from our group, such as Lenticular Objects and ShiftLens, have achieved mechanically coupled and locationally coupled effects with rigid optical structures. This project extends this direction to voxelized deformable materials so that mechanical deformation, such as stretching, bending, or compression, induces targeted optical effects, such as pattern switching and moiré phenomena, without any embedded electronics or active components.
