Research Project Title:

Visualization of Global Road Quality Data

abstract:Carbin is a smartphone application that has been developed to use a phone's accelerometer to assess road quality and automobile condition. The goal of my project is to use the road statistics collected by Carbin to determine solutions for large scale transportation. The analysis of the roughness distribution of roads and traffic volume will be used to calculate the impact of repairing a road on its carbon footprint. Through this analysis, advisory in terms of the costs and benefits of repairing a given road can be made. Further multivariate analysis will be performed to determine correlations between road quality and other, possibly unconsidered, factors. Finally, a visualization tool will be developed to make this research publicly accessible.
