Exploring Techniques for Minimally-Invasive Deep Brain Imaging Through Complex Media

Deep brain imaging is crucial for our ability to study the complex neural circuits that are responsible for our behaviors and mental states. However, deep imaging in the brain remains a challenge because as photons are sent through increasingly numerous layers of tissue, they are further scattered and diffused. In this project, we aim to explore imaging systems and algorithms that allow us to deliver light deep into the tissue and retrieve images without loss. We will utilize randomness to our advantage and leverage the deterministic nature of light propagation in complex media via recent advances in optics and machine learning.
I am excited to participate in SuperUROP because I greatly enjoyed my previous opportunities to conduct research and am now looking to take on a longer-term project. I hope to learn more about the process of developing and carrying out a research goal, and I am particularly excited to be working on an interdisciplinary project with medical applications that combines my interests in healthcare, physics, neuroscience, and computation.
