Instrumented Crutch for Adaptive Balance Assistance

Our project will focus on the development of a novel crutch which adjusts the level of assistance it provides based on its user’s balance needs. It’s possible that a crutch which constantly pushes users to improve their balance might reduce rehabilitation times. We will first explore the interaction between crutch and user, quantifying the force applied to the crutch and the way it is positioned over time. This data will inform the next phase of the project, the actual designing and prototyping of an alternative crutch. For example, this crutch might become less stiff as the user’s balance improves so that the user becomes less dependent on it.
Through SuperUROP, I hope to gain more experience applying the mechanical engineering principles I’ve learned in the classroom to the design process. I’ve been working as a medical device researcher in another MIT lab for four semesters, so I’m excited to tackle a medical device project of my own. I hope to make a positive contribution to my group and possibly be part of a published paper.
