Our project proposes to develop a computational framework for automated discovery of mechanical metamaterials. The system will take as input user-specified mechanical objectives and generate candidate microstructure geometries optimized to achieve the desired physical response. As an initial focus, we will target periodic and spatially varying microstructures for programmable stiffness, directional compliance, and energy absorption. Example inputs may include a target effective stiffness tensor, a desired force-displacement curve, maximum energy absorption under compression, or a prescribed deformation response.
Through this SuperUROP, I hope to apply my mathematics and computational background to contribute to a long-term research project. I look forward to learning about metamaterials and expanding my knowledge of real-world applications to materials design and manufacturing.
