Social media platforms have transformed human interaction. They’ ve improved our lives by connecting us with people, removing barriers to collective action, and putting information at our fingertips. However, social media has also had some negative effects. There is also evidence that platforms may choose to not to mitigate these negative effects, leading to rising calls to regulate social media, as well as pushback against regulation. Some are concerned that regulation will make social media worse. We will build a qualitative dataset of proposed social media regulation in the US, and use this dataset to describe possible social media regulation with regard to legal, technical, and political feasibility and then focus on promising regulatory solutions.
