Automated Detection of Eye Disorders
abstract:With an ophthalmologist in India, we are considering the possibility of creating a screening tool that can quickly categorize eye conditions from images taken during a screening session. The ability to do so reliably in an automated manner can have significant impact on patient care. One example comes from the domain of eye cancers (retinoblastomas). If these are detected early, the cancer can be excised relatively easily. But, delayed diagnosis can lead to total loss of sight, or even of life. Many children are brought to the hospital very late. An automated system for early detection can greatly improve outcomes. The project will involve reviewing past AI systems for ophthalmic screening and developing our own computer vision system for this purpose.
I am taking SuperUROP because I have performed research in the past and it has been one of the highlights of my MIT experience. I have taken more computer science and machine learning courses and am hoping to use the knowledge I have acquired to make a tangible difference with my research.
