For people with type 1 diabetes, the destruction of insulin producing β-cells causes an imbalance in glucose levels. This necessitates lifelong insulin therapy via subcutaneous infusion pumps or multiple daily injections. An alternative and promising solution for cellular replacement is through islet cell encapsulation, where cells are enclosed in polymeric membranes that allow the selective passing of insulin while blocking immune attacks. This project will explore the material design for such biocompatible membranes, with the end goal of a robust protocol for the fabrication of these devices.
I am excited to be part of SuperUROP and improve both my research and communication skills. With the potential for real impact in healthcare, I hope to make the most out of this project through the program. I am looking forward to exploring how research in mechanics and materials can solve some of the most challenging problems in medicine.
