Manipulation and Analysis of LiDAR + Hyperspectral Data in VR
abstract:The goal of my SuperUROP is to create a VR system for performing scientific field tasks and evaluate success and utility of the system when compared to traditional desktop applications. I will achieve this by capturing and integrating LIDAR, RGB-D, hyperspectral and multispectral data into VR, and creating tools for performing tasks like distance, angle and volume measurements in VR. Then, I will evaluate task performance metrics when using this system vs traditional methods. The performance metrics will include time to complete task, task performance and accuracy of completing tasks such as object recognition, measuring distance, path lengths, angles and object volumes.
I am super excited to be participating in SuperUROP this year. I think it will be a perfect progression after UROPing with the Human Systems Lab for 2 years now. I will be able to own my own project, and end with a publishable research paper to show for my work. I am excited to see if we can quantitatively show the advantages of VR and how it can be used for real life science missions.
