Research Project Title:
Studying Linkages Between Firm-Level Lobbying and Campaign Contributions
abstract:In any election, many groups try to influence the outcome. Two primary methods for exerting this influence are lobbying and direct campaign contributions. Both firms and their employees engage in this behavior, and this project aims to consider relationships between an employee’s campaign contributions and his/her employer’s political activity. Do they align on candidates, causes, or even their downstream impacts on congressional bills and legislators? Previous work has been done to create robust databases on firm usage of lobbyists (available at lobbyview.org) and individuals’ campaign contributions. This project will build upon these datasets to investigate the links between lobbying and campaign contributions in the USA and yield a thorough view of our systems of political influence.
"I'm majoring in 6-14 (Computer Science and Economics) and am interested in pursuing a career in social science research. Political science has always been an area of interest for me, particularly studies around elections. I'm excited to gain exposure to this field academically with a program like SuperUROP, especially with a CS - HASS joint project."
